Booking More Clients as A Beginning Photographer
It's no secret that getting your first photography clients can be HARD AS HELL! Sometimes a little embarrassing. At least it was for me. It was a job within itself. I remember thinking that not only did I have to shoot and edit the images, I also had to get the clients. It was really exhausting. No one helped me. I remember writing other local photographers and asking for any tips they may have had. All I received were CRICKETS!! Most photographers don't like to give up what works for them. Nowadays I don't blame them but when I was starting off I HATED IT!
I really put myself out there. There are some things I would have done differently (i.e working for free). But I am going to give you a few tips on finding your first PAYING clients.
Shoot, shoot and shoot some more.
This is really a no-brainer. The more things you photograph.. the more places you can tag online, hashtags you can use and photos you can post. All those things lead clients right to you. It's the most basic yet rewarding marketing strategy to have.
I can't tell you how many clients I have booked because they saw my work through an Instagram hashtag. *cough* A LOT *cough*. It is quite frankly, freaking brilliant and you should be doing it.
Comment, comment, and comment some more.
Facebook groups are a game changer. There are always people "ISO: Photographer for photos" You need to be commenting on those with your website, Instagram handle and Facebook page. Show them you're available and give them all those links to check out your work. People love searching for things. Make it easy for the clients to find you. People want to be able to click a link and see your work(i.e www.poppyseedphotographycb.com). If you don't post a link (for example @Poppyseedphotography) THEY WILL NOT BE HIRING YOU! They will mostly hire the person who posts their link and made it easy for them.
I am to the point where my clients tag me and my business in posts like those nowadays. It's awesome! I love it but when I first started out. You better believe I was tagging myself in that shiz! Clients are not just going to miraculously find you when you first start. You have to lead them to you!
Do a free giveaway.
Now this one is cool. Though I don't recommend working for free, I do however recommend doing a giveaway to get your name out there. Make sure it's at a location YOU want to shoot at. If you do a free giveaway at a place you're wanting to shoot at, your killing two birds with one stone ( I hate that saying. Don't kill cute birds).
1. Your giveaway will get your name out there
2. You can now market that really cool location for future clients.
I don't really do giveaways anymore unless I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to shoot at a certain location. Although when I first started out. I was doing giveaways like crazy!
Pass out your business cards.
This tip is so very awesome. Wherever you go try to pass out at least ONE business card. I'm not saying walk up to people and say "Hey man here's my card. Call me if you need photos." (smh) I am saying create a great experience with someone. Have a meaningful conversation, compliment their cute kids, build a good relationship and then hit them with the business card (JAB JAB JAB RIGHT HOOK best marketing book ever).
I always go play at the mall with my kids. Somehow moms come up and talk to me. I ask them about themselves, their family, compliment their cute kids and then when they leave I will pull out my card and say " Hey You're so cool and I had a blast. The next time you come to the mall let me know. We'll meet you" BAM! there it is. I am not saying "Yo girl hit me up if you want pictures" ( I swear I'm not ghetto). I am simply saying " I had a blast, call me when you come here again" She will see I am a photographer, Get a little curious, Stalk my Instagram and website because ALL women do that, Myself included. Sooner or later I will get an email or text about photos. It's truly one of the best tips I have!
